Biography

Shafiqul Islam was a Bangladeshi migrant worker from Bhaluka Chandpur village in Satkhira Sadar Upazila, Bangladesh. He was the eldest son and the only earning member of his family. In February 2026, he traveled to Lebanon after borrowing about Tk 800,000 to seek employment and improve his family’s financial condition. He worked in a bakery in southern Lebanon until he was killed in an Israeli drone strike on May 11, 2026.

Shafiqul Islam, reported as either 40 years old in different news accounts, was the son of Afsar Ali and Ajoyea Khatun of Bhaluka Chandpur village in Satkhira Sadar Upazila, Bangladesh. He was the eldest child in the family, and his three sisters were already married. As the sole breadwinner, he supported his elderly parents, wife, and two daughters.

Facing financial hardship, Shafiqul decided to seek work abroad. To finance his journey, he borrowed approximately Tk 800,000 from various lenders. He traveled to Lebanon on February 25, 2026, along with Nahidul Islam, a younger acquaintance from the same district. In Lebanon, Shafiqul worked in a bakery in the Zebdine area of Nabatieh district.

Despite being abroad for only a short time, he managed to send Tk 40,000 to his family about a month before his death. On May 11, 2026, fearing an impending Israeli attack, he and Nahid attempted to move to a safer location. They were killed when an Israeli drone strike hit their area. His death devastated his family, who lost their only source of income and remained burdened by substantial debt.
