Shafiqul Islam was killed during an Israeli drone strike in southern Lebanon. Shafiqul Islam’s death occurred amid ongoing hostilities in southern Lebanon. After traveling to Lebanon on February 25, 2026, he found work in a bakery while living with fellow Bangladeshi Nahidul Islam. On May 11, 2026, as tensions escalated and residents feared a possible Israeli attack, the two men attempted to relocate to a safer area by van. Before they could escape, an Israeli drone strike hit in the Zebdine area of Nabatieh district, killing them instantly. Their bodies were taken to Nabih Berri Hospital in Nabatieh. His death was especially tragic because he had migrated abroad to lift his family out of poverty and repay significant loans.
Biography
Shafiqul Islam was a Bangladeshi migrant worker from Bhaluka Chandpur village in Satkhira Sadar Upazila, Bangladesh. He was the eldest son and the only earning member of his family. In February 2026, he traveled to Lebanon after borrowing about Tk 800,000 to seek employment and improve his family’s financial condition. He worked in a bakery in southern Lebanon until he was killed in an Israeli drone strike on May 11, 2026.

Shafiqul Islam, reported as either 40 years old in different news accounts, was the son of Afsar Ali and Ajoyea Khatun of Bhaluka Chandpur village in Satkhira Sadar Upazila, Bangladesh. He was the eldest child in the family, and his three sisters were already married. As the sole breadwinner, he supported his elderly parents, wife, and two daughters.
Facing financial hardship, Shafiqul decided to seek work abroad. To finance his journey, he borrowed approximately Tk 800,000 from various lenders. He traveled to Lebanon on February 25, 2026, along with Nahidul Islam, a younger acquaintance from the same district. In Lebanon, Shafiqul worked in a bakery in the Zebdine area of Nabatieh district.
Despite being abroad for only a short time, he managed to send Tk 40,000 to his family about a month before his death. On May 11, 2026, fearing an impending Israeli attack, he and Nahid attempted to move to a safer location. They were killed when an Israeli drone strike hit their area. His death devastated his family, who lost their only source of income and remained burdened by substantial debt.

Shafiqul Islam’s family expressed profound grief and concern about their uncertain future. His father, Afsar Ali, said that Shafiqul was the family’s only earning member and asked how they would survive and repay the Tk 800,000 loan taken to send him abroad. His mother, Ajoyea Khatun, recounted how he had gone to Lebanon in hopes of changing the family’s fortunes. The family is expected to seek government assistance to repatriate his body and financial support to help cover their debts and ongoing living expenses.
