Early on a Sunday morning deputies responded to Garcia's property on neighbors' reports of numerous dead animals in his yard. He was known to struggle with paranoid schizophrenia. Deputies encountered Garcia still firing his shotgun. After refusing to surrender or drop the weapon, he was fatally shot.
