Zakariyya Ibrahim Badwan
Zakariyya Ibrahim Badwan was shot and killed by Israeli soldiers during a military operation in the West Bank.
Zakariyya Ibrahim Badwan was initially shot and wounded by Israeli soldiers during a military invasion in the Ein Ajeeb area, near Beit Anan town, northwest of Jerusalem. Despite his injuries, he was reportedly abducted by the soldiers and later succumbed to his wounds. Witnesses stated that undercover Israeli forces surrounded the structure where he and two other Palestinians were sheltering and fired a small explosive device followed by live ammunition. He was one of the Palestinians targeted in what appeared to be a premeditated assassination operation, part of a wider campaign by the Israeli military to capture or kill suspected members of Hamas.
Biography
Zakariyya Ibrahim Badwan, 36, was a Palestinian from Biddu town, located northwest of occupied Jerusalem. A former political prisoner, Zakariyya spent nine years in Israeli detention. He was a married father of two young children—an 18-month-old and an infant born just four months before his death. Known in his community for his resilience, Zakariyya was among several Palestinians targeted during a large-scale Israeli military operation in the West Bank on September 26, 2021. Despite having already endured imprisonment, he remained connected to his community and was one of those pursued by Israeli forces in an alleged crackdown on Hamas-affiliated individuals.
Zakariyya Ibrahim Badwan was born in 1985 in Biddu, a Palestinian town northwest of occupied Jerusalem. His life was marked by the ongoing conflict in the region. As a young man, Zakariyya became politically active and was imprisoned by Israel for nine years, likely due to alleged affiliations or activities related to resistance against the occupation. He used his time in prison to educate himself and became known among his peers for his determination and strength of character.
Following his release, Zakariyya returned to civilian life and focused on his family, marrying and fathering two children. His eldest child was only 18 months old at the time of his death, while his youngest had just been born four months earlier. Zakariyya remained under constant surveillance and pressure by Israeli forces, especially during their frequent raids into Palestinian villages and towns.
In the weeks leading up to his killing, Israeli forces had been attempting to capture him, along with others they suspected of ties to Hamas. His assassination came during a broad military operation involving elite units, including Duvdevan special forces, and was part of a series of simultaneous attacks on different West Bank locations.
