Esperanza Ghandour died as a result of injuries sustained in an Israeli drone strike that targeted the vehicle in which she was traveling in the Nabatieh district of southern Lebanon. Reports indicate that a guided missile struck near or directly hit the civilian vehicle, killing all occupants instantly.
After months of displacement caused by fighting in southern Lebanon, Esperanza Ghandour returned to her hometown of Nabatieh al-Fawqa to inspect repairs and assess the condition of her family's war-damaged home. She was accompanied by her mother, a domestic worker employed by the family, and a Syrian worker assisting with the property. As they traveled back along the Nabatieh al-Fawqa road near the Teachers' House, an Israeli drone reportedly fired a guided missile at or near their vehicle. The strike killed all four occupants instantly and triggered widespread mourning across Lebanon's education sector and local community.
Biography
Esperanza Ghandour was a Lebanese educator and principal of the Youssef Shamoun Official School in Nabatieh al-Fawqa. She was widely respected for her dedication to education and for revitalizing her school through educational reforms and support for teachers and students. Esperanza Ghandour became principal of Youssef Shamoun Official School approximately five years before her death.
