Zaher died after being shot by Israeli forces during a military operation in Jabalia refugee camp.
Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor reports that Zaher was shot during Israeli military activity in Jabalia on December 10, 2025. The organization alleges that after he was wounded and incapacitated, he was denied timely medical assistance due to ongoing military fire in the area. Euro-Med further alleges that an Israeli military vehicle subsequently ran over his body, resulting in his death. These claims are allegations by a human-rights organization and have not been adjudicated by an international court.
Biography
Zaher Nasser Adel Harb Shamia was a 16-year-old Palestinian boy from the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza. Known among family and neighbors as gentle, helpful, and responsible beyond his years, Zaher loved football and remained closely connected to his community despite repeated wars, displacement, and hardship. After a ceasefire took effect, he returned to Jabalia to check on relatives and assist others. He was reportedly unarmed and not involved in hostilities at the time of his death. His killing has been cited by human-rights organizations as an emblematic case of the dangers faced by Palestinian children in Gaza.
Zaher Nasser Adel Harb Shamia was born into a family displaced from the village of Hamama and raised in the densely populated Jabalia refugee camp. Growing up amid repeated military escalations, he experienced bombardment, shortages, and displacement from an early age. Despite these conditions, those who knew him described Zaher as kind-hearted, cooperative, and deeply respectful toward elders.
He was named after an uncle who was killed during the 2008 Gaza war, a legacy that shaped his family’s sense of loss and resilience. Zaher was attached to his neighborhood and community and reportedly returned to Jabalia following a ceasefire to reconnect with family members and help others affected by the conflict. According to human-rights monitors, he was a civilian child and posed no threat at the time of the incident that led to his death. His case has been widely cited by advocacy groups calling for accountability for harm to minors in Gaza.
Pleas of Surviving Relatives and Family if any
Zaher's personal account was shared by one of his uncles that he lay wounded on the ground — still alive, still conscious — an Israeli military vehicle drove over his body, crushing him, splitting him in half.
This is what was done to a teenage boy. A boy who was named after his uncle, a man killed in the 2008 war.
A boy who carried the weight of exile — from Hamama to Jabalia — without ever seeing the land his family once came from.
