Deputy Nicholas Dempsey began following a car with no lights around the other tag. Jeremy Andrew Nichols then allegedly made an illegal U-turn and sped away about 2:25 a.m., then turned onto Hopewell Road with Dempsey following him. After he activated his lights and sirens, Nichols accelerated above 100 mph. Dempsey was about a tenth of a mile behind Nichols when Nichols lost control of the 2011 Chrysler 300 and veered left striking a utility pole, killing his passenger, Zach Carter.
