Biography
Yazan Naim Affana was a 24-year-old Palestinian man from the Qalandia refugee camp, located between occupied Jerusalem and Ramallah in the central West Bank. He was killed on September 1, 2022, by Israeli forces during a military raid in the city of Al-Biereh, part of the Ramallah and Al-Biereh governorate. Yazan was shot in the heart with live ammunition amid heavy clashes following an Israeli incursion into the Um ash-Sharayet neighborhood. His death occurred during yet another wave of violence in the occupied West Bank, where Israeli forces frequently carry out operations involving home raids, arrests, and lethal force.
Yazan Affana, 24, came from the densely populated Qalandia refugee camp, a place marked by frequent confrontations with Israeli forces and harsh restrictions on movement. Like many Palestinians raised in refugee camps, Yazan lived under the burden of systemic military occupation and the constant threat of raids and violence.
On the early morning of September 1, 2022, Israeli soldiers invaded Al-Biereh city with a large number of military jeeps, sparking confrontations with local youth. As protests erupted in the Um ash-Sharayet neighborhood, soldiers fired live rounds, rubber-coated steel bullets, and gas bombs. Amid the chaos, Yazan was fatally shot in the heart.
