Deadly force
A Jasper County Sheriff's Department deputy and Indiana State Police troopers responded to a call of an intoxicated man, Messer, at a Wheatfield convenience store. As police were headed to the convenience store, they received information that Messer had wrecked his other in a ditch, after which he fled the scene in the other. License plate information led responding officers to Messer's home. originally reported that while Messer was at his residence he entered and exited the home several times carrying a shotgun with him. He was shot and killed. The shotgun was unloaded despite the fact that police originally reported he fired first.
