William Wade Burgess III allegedly carjacked a pickup from a 67-year old man and his 10-year-old grandson. An off-duty sheriff's deputy was heading to work around 6:30 a.m. when he saw the pickup truck make a u-turn and strike the 67-year-old man before crashing into a yard and fleeing on foot. The off-duty deputy pursued Burgess behind some homes before shooting and killing the fleeing unarmed suspect. Burgess had used a screwdriver to carjack the pickup, but he'd left it behind when he crashed. Burgess's mother described her son as a mentally ill heroin addict.
