A deputy tried to stop Chad B. Smith and William M. Cogger Smith at around 10 p.m., after seeing Smith driving erratically on westbound I-80 near Newton. A high-speed chase ensued until Smith's car struck the rear of a semi-truck. Smith and Cogger both died in the crash.
