Eddines and another man in a carjacked SUV were shot in the back by police because their other "suddenly flew" into reverse. Eddines was killed, the other man wounded. Local police came under community criticism and federal scrutiny for this and other shootings in the northwest section of the city. Eddines' mother went uncontacted by police for a week.
