An officer tried to pull over a driver about 5 a.m., but Tony Smith allegedly refused to stop and took off. Police said he rapidly accelerated near the downtown area and turned off his headlights. The officer reportedly ended the pursuit and a short time later found the other had crashed into a tree. Smith was thrown from the other and killed.
