Police said officer Cheryl Leatherman stopped a pickup truck driven by Todd Richard Root around 2 a.m. after seeing him crossing the centerline on Veterans Memorial Drive. Root allegedly rammed Leatherman's cruiser twice before taking off at high speed. Root crashed the truck into a ditch. He died from his injuries two days later.
