Spears was found agitated, after dark, by the roadside, dressed only in socks and underwear and under the influence of cocaine. He died after being repeatedly tasered. Medical opinion differed as to whether Spears died from cocaine overdose, Taser, or asphyxiation. His family settled with the city for $1.95M.
