About 1 a.m., the sheriff's office received a call that had been transferred to them from the Bessemer Police Department reporting that a man had been shot. The 44-year-old victim was able to drive himself to a location on Powder Plant Road, where he reached police. The victim was then taken to the hospital but was unable to speak with officers. About 6:40 a.m., deputies were dispatched to the mine again, this time on a report of a dead person. Deputies arrived to find Samuel Owens Bell Jr., 80, dead from a gunshot. The victim's 2005 black Cadillac Escalade SUV bearing Alabama tag 1CT7896 had been taken. At about 12:45 p.m., Cullman County deputies observed a suspicious other. The suspect refused to stop and fled. Ultimately, the suspect other became stuck Steven Chad Wright fled on foot and stole another other. Addison police successfully deployed spike strips and disabled the other. Once the other was stopped and the pursuit ended, deputies discovered Wright was dead from a self-inflicted gunshot.
