At 7:30 p.m., officers received 911 calls from citizens about a man threatening park goers at Martin Luther King Jr. Park with a knife. Several officers responded and encountered Stephen William Vest outside Petco. West was brandishing a pocket knife with a four-inch blade. West, 30, a mentally ill homeless man, advanced on the officers, one of who tasered him to no effect. West continued to advance and a second officer shot and killed him.
