Eriksen and his brother were entering a holding cell on a marijuana possession charge when Eriksen was taken by the throat and violently thrown against a bench. The combination of his grave head wound and medical treatment delayed by about two hours left him brain dead. He was taken off life support afterward. Eriksen's family settled with the county for $3M in August 2011.
