Saud died after sustaining severe burns when a fire broke out inside his family’s nylon tent on Thursday night at the Yarmouk displacement camp. The fire ignited while his uncle/father figure, Muhammad, was cooking dinner, when hot cooking oil caught fire inside the confined tent. The tent’s highly flammable nylon material, combined with plastic household items and strong winter winds, caused the flames to spread rapidly. Despite attempts by family members to extinguish the fire, the blaze quickly engulfed the tent, trapping Saud inside and leading to his death alongside his grandmother.

Biography

Saud was a five-year-old Palestinian child living with his displaced family at the Yarmouk displacement camp in Gaza City. As a result of the war and destruction of civilian homes, he grew up in makeshift nylon tent housing, exposed to harsh winter weather and unsafe living conditions. Saud died alongside his grandmother, Amal Abu al-Khair, in a tent fire, becoming one of many children whose lives were cut short amid Gaza’s ongoing humanitarian crisis.

Saud was a five-year-old Palestinian child living in displacement with his family at the Yarmouk displacement camp in Gaza City. He was the grandson of Amal Abu al-Khair and one of hundreds of thousands of children in Gaza forced to live in makeshift nylon tents due to the destruction of homes and the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
Like many displaced children, Saud was exposed to unsafe shelter conditions, extreme winter weather, and overcrowded living spaces where tents served simultaneously as bedrooms, kitchens, and living areas.

Pleas of Surviving Relatives and Family if any

Mona Abu al-Khair, a relative, stated that the tent was used as both a living and cooking space, filled with flammable materials, and that the confined conditions made the fire uncontrollable.

A neighbour, Ashraf al-Suwair, said the nylon tents ignite “like fuel” and called for safe housing for Gaza’s children, warning that families should not be left to “burn to death” in tents.
