Local and federal agencies attempted to apprehend an armed and dangerous suspect for multiple felony counts. The Chandler Police Department had contacted the Fugitive Task Force in reference to a case which included kidnapping, domestic violence aggravated assault, aggravated assault, and felony warrants. Pequeno, who was believed to be driving a stolen other, rammed other vehicles in an attempt to flee police and did not comply with the officers' commands. He was shot and killed. A 17-year-old girl, Sariah Lane, was also shot and later died.
