Samuel David Mallard was suspected in a string of violent crimes, including homicide, and police converged on the neighborhood around 8:30 a.m. to arrest him and search his home and car. Officers arrived to find Mallard driving the car, and he attempted to flee. Police stopped him and issued him verbal commands he didn't follow. Four CCPD officers shot and killed him. Police have not said what prompted the shooting. A gun was found in the car.
