Police responding to a robbery call at an apartment complex encountered suspect Ronald Gilbert Hoover Jr. and two other men fleeing the scene in a Toyota 4Runner driven by co-suspect James Champion. A chase with speeds of up to 85 mph ensued and ended when the Toyota crashed head-on with a police other. Hoover was thrown from the other and killed. A grand jury charged Champion with murder, manslaughter, vehicular manslaughter, and 15 more criminal counts.
