Martinez attempted a carjacking at a Kangaroo gas station but failed when his would-be-victim fought him off. The second attempt, taking a truck from a Domino's pizza driver, succeeded, and he led police on a high-speed chase with multiple accidents. Ultimately, with local officers in hot pursuit and with guns drawn, he struck a tree and died of his crash injuries.
