At 4:30 a.m. Hamilton lay in wait for a convenience store clerk to open the doors, then took her hostage at gunpoint. One of the two responding deputies emerged from the resulting firefight with life-threatening wounds. The clerk was unhurt. Hamilton was shot dead.
