A deputy said he tried to stop Robert West's motorcycle just after midnight. As he approached, the deputy reportedly heard West tell his passenger he was going to take off. West clipped a other at US-31. West and his passenger were thrown into a guardrail. West died from his injuries nearly a week later, on July 12.
