Montgomery County Sheriff's deputies and the Christiansburg police officers were trying to serve a felony drug warrant on Robert Kevin Hughes at his home. When they arrived he tried to run away from officers, and fired at them with a pistol. Officers returned fire and Hughes died at the scene.
