Gurley was one of five armed suspects caught in the act of beating and robbing two other men. The encounter led to a midnight firefight among those five and two police. Three of the other suspects were injured while Gurley was fatally wounded. He made it a few dozen yards down the Seventh Avenue entertainment strip before he dropped.
