In the early hours of May 16, 2021, Israeli warplanes carried out a massive bombardment of al-Wehda Street in Gaza City. Tens of warplanes fired over 100 missiles in just minutes, causing the collapse of multiple residential buildings. Reham was among those trapped under the rubble of her destroyed home. Rescue teams later recovered her body, along with sixteen other relatives ranging from infants to elderly family members. The strike devastated her family, wiping out nearly an entire generation. International human rights groups noted that the attack exemplified disproportionate and indiscriminate targeting of civilians.

Biography

Reham Fawaz Al-Qulaq, 30, was a computer engineer from Gaza City. She was known for her dedication to her field and was part of the well-respected al-Qulaq family, many of whom were academics, professionals, and students. On May 16, 2021, her life was cut short when Israeli warplanes bombarded al-Wehda Street, destroying her family home and killing her along with multiple relatives.

Reham was born and raised in Gaza, where she pursued her education in computer engineering. As part of the al-Qulaq family, she grew up in a household that valued education, service, and community. Friends and colleagues described her as intelligent, committed to her profession, and full of potential. On the night of May 16, 2021, she was sheltering at home with her family when a barrage of Israeli missiles struck residential buildings on al-Wehda Street. The attack resulted in one of the deadliest nights of the May 2021 offensive, killing 43 people, most of them women and children, including 17 members of the al-Qulaq family.

The missile strikes killed seventeen members of the al-Qulaq family, ranging in age from 1 to 90, as they huddled in their homes in terror while the Israeli airstrikes continued throughout the night. Local Palestinians reported hearing as many as 150 Israeli bombs during the night. One of the families wiped out by an Israeli missile during the barrage of bombs dropped on al-Wehda Street was that of Riyad Hasan Ishkantna, who was pulled out of the rubble Sunday morning by rescue crews, barely alive, only to be told when he reached the hospital that his wife and four young children, ranging in age from 2 to 9 years old, were all killed in the Israeli attack. Also killed in the barrage of airstrikes on al-Wihda Street was Dr. Mo’in Ahmad al-Aloul, a neurologist and brain specialist.
