Hannah was the passenger in a car pulled over by local police for suspected DUI. His request for a ride home was granted. Things were fine in the back seat for a while, but then he assaulted his friend, the driver. Officers removed and cuffed him but did not Taser him. He died shortly after, a death attributed by the coroner to excited delirium.
