Abernathy, schizophrenic and high on cocaine, led officers on a car chase after they watched him drive a black SUV the wrong direction down an interstate. He later stopped the SUV in front of his mother's house. Two officers tried and failed to subdue him. Ultimately, seven officers struck, tasered and arrested Abernathy. Paramedics failed to revive him at the scene. His family sued police for civil rights violations.
