NYPD plainclothes transit police approached Peter Jourdan after seeing him move from one subway car to another, a violation. Jourdan responded by pulling a 9mm pistol and firing on both officers, wounding one seriously. The other returned fire and shot and killed Jourdan. He'd had significant mental health issues and an extensive arrest record, unknown to the officers.
