Two deputies reportedly were guarding a third deputy who was hospitalized at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center when a patient suffering a psychiatric crisis, Nick Burgos, began smashing the hospitalized deputy's door window with a metal medical device. One of the deputies shot Burgos seven times, who died nearly a month later.
