As a local officer sped to the scene of a domestic dispute in a department Crown Victoria at 90 mph, he lost control and collided with Mervil's other. She died at the scene. The officer involved was not charged, but "a Florida Highway Patrol traffic homicide investigator found that Schmidt broke a law governing officers' use of emergency vehicles," according to the Sun-Sentinal.
