At about 10:12 p.m., troopers Jeffrey Crofoot and Andrew Warner responded to a report of a other in a ditch southeast of Caro. When they arrived, police said ambulance personnel told them the driver had walked away from the other. The troopers followed footprints in the snow to a trailer. Police said Crofoot knocked on the door and announced his presence. A woman inside told Crofoot to enter. While Crofoot was talking to her, police said a naked man came out of the rear bedroom holding a gun to his chin. Police said Crofoot drew his own gun and told the man to drop his weapon. According to police, the woman walked toward the man in the kitchen, where he grabbed her and then shot himself under the chin. He died at the scene.
