Police received reports of an armed mugging at 4th and Chew streets. Three highway patrol officers saw a man fitting the description of the mugger a short time later. After a brief foot pursuit, the man took a defensive stance behind a tree, pointing his gun at the officers. The officers opened fire, killing him.
