Arrested on July 3, 2023, Mohsen was accused of collaborating with Israel’s Mossad and of involvement in high-profile attacks, including the 2022 assassination of IRGC Colonel Hassan Sayyad Khodaei and a 2023 drone strike on a defense site in Isfahan. Iranian authorities alleged that he had traveled to Georgia and Nepal to meet with foreign intelligence agents and provided logistical and technical support for operations targeting Iran. However, these accusations were deeply contested by Mohsen, his family, and multiple human rights organizations.

Mohsen maintained his innocence throughout his detention. In a voice message smuggled out before his execution, he revealed he had been tortured by Ministry of Intelligence agents and deprived of epilepsy medication until he confessed. "I am innocent," he said. "They broke me with pain and fear." His trial, held in the opaque Revolutionary Court system in Tehran, was marred by a lack of due process: he was denied access to an independent lawyer and was ultimately sentenced to death based on a coerced confession. The execution was carried out in secret at Ghezel Hesar Prison in Karaj, one of Iran’s most notorious prisons, without informing his family beforehand.
