On May 7, 2021, he was killed alongside Abdullah Khaled Da’bas, also 20, near the Salem Israeli military roadblock close to Jenin. A third Palestinian, Ahmad Bashir Foqaha, 19, was seriously injured in the same incident.

According to Israeli military sources, the three Palestinians approached the Salem military base and allegedly opened fire at the main gate using improvised submachine guns known as “Carlos.” Israeli border police and soldiers responded with live fire, killing Fathi and Da’bas on the spot and critically wounding Foqaha.

Palestinian ambulances reportedly rushed to the scene but were prevented by Israeli forces from reaching the wounded. The area was subsequently sealed off, and Palestinian journalists attempting to cover the incident were reportedly attacked.

This incident occurred during a period of heightened tensions in the region, particularly in Jerusalem and the West Bank, contributing to the broader unrest that escalated into the 2021 Israel–Palestine crisis.
