Police said officers responded to a report of an armed man threatening to kill himself or police. When they arrived at Miquell "Mike" David Deppa's house, officers heard gunshots and saw a man with a rifle run inside. Two women then ran out of the house to safety. Officers' arrival prompted an hours-long standoff during which the man fired several shots in the direction of police, according to reports after the incident. The Star Tribune reported that a Beltrami County SWAT team sniper fired once, fatally wounding Deppa.
