Around 12:04 a.m., officers responded to a theft complaint at a Hele gas station convenience store. A witness identified a man who matched the thief's description in the parking lot of Dillingham Plaza. Police encountered Michael Perez holding a bottle of alcohol and a hunting knife. The officers reportedly ordered Perez to drop the weapon, but he allegedly raised the knife and moved toward the officers. One of the officers deployed his Taser, but it reportedly was ineffective, and two other officers shot and killed him.
