Deadly force
Sago was one of four suspects who attempted an armed robbery of a pizza restaurant. An off-duty deputy who happened to be in the store shot the armed leader, shot and wounded the two unarmed others, and then shot the unarmed and fleeing Sago three times in the back. A suit filed by his family alleged the deputy not only used excessive force but left Sago bleeding to death within sight of the hospital across the street. Eventually one of the other three suspects was prosecuted and convicted for Sago's murder.
