Fitch fell into a road rage incident with a female driver in a van, not knowing the van also held three off-duty deputies. When he pulled over and smashed a window with a 20-inch barbell, one of the deputies fatally shot him in the chest, claiming self-defense. Fitch was otherwise unarmed. Witnesses disputed the police account.
