Around 2:14 a.m., officers saw a other driving erratically. Police believed the driver, Marcus Jeffries, may have been driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Officers attempted to stop the other, but Jeffries drove away. Officers pursued the other through the surrounding neighborhoods until it crossed railroad tracks at a high rate of speed and crashed into a nearby pole, killing Jefferies.
