A retired NYPD officer working as a security guard was approached in his car, at 3 a.m. by an attempted carjacker, Ocampo. The officer handed over his wallet and lottery tickets, threw out some items on the ground to split Ocampo's attention, then started shooting. Ocampo was fatally wounded and an accomplice fled.
