Biography
Mahdi Mohammad Hamdallah Hashash was a 17-year-old Palestinian teenager from the Balata Refugee Camp near Nablus. He was shot and killed by Israeli forces during a military incursion on November 9, 2022, near Joseph’s Tomb—an area frequently raided by Israeli forces and settlers under military protection. Mahdi was reportedly struck with a live bullet to the chest during confrontations between local Palestinians and the invading forces. The Israeli army claimed he had thrown explosives, though no injuries were reported on their side. He was a member of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades.
Mahdi Hashash was born and raised in the densely populated Balata Refugee Camp, the largest refugee camp in the West Bank, where poverty, overcrowding, and military incursions are a regular part of life. Like many youth in the camp, Mahdi grew up under occupation, shaped by daily encounters with military violence, curfews, and limited freedom of movement.
Despite his young age, Mahdi was affiliated with the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, a sign of his deep involvement in the political and armed resistance struggle that many in his community see as a response to systemic oppression. Friends and local residents described Mahdi as passionate, courageous, and deeply affected by the repeated Israeli raids on his community.
On the night of his death, Israeli military forces accompanied a group of Israeli settlers to Joseph’s Tomb under heavy protection. These incursions are often met with protests by Palestinians who view them as provocative and militarized. During the protest, Mahdi was reportedly shot in the chest with a live bullet. Eyewitnesses said soldiers fired live ammunition, rubber-coated steel bullets, and tear gas canisters at the youth who had gathered to protest the raid.
Medics from the Palestinian Red Crescent Society attempted to save his life but were unable to do so. In addition to Mahdi’s fatal injury, three others were shot with rubber bullets, and over 50 people suffered from tear gas inhalation.
His death came during a period of intensified Israeli military operations in the West Bank and sparked renewed mourning and anger in Nablus, particularly among youth and resistance groups. Mahdi's funeral was attended by large crowds, with mourners vowing to continue the resistance against the occupation. His martyrdom has since been honored by the Al-Aqsa Brigades as part of the ongoing struggle in the northern West Bank.
