When Jamie Nicole Campbell's mother reported her missing, police tracked her car. Hernandez, her husband, was armed and holding her hostage in the car. Negotiators communicated all night via phone. In "an effort to protect Campbell and prevent Hernandez from taking his own life", deputies "were authorized to execute an emergency assault". When they approached the car, Hernandez shot Campbell in the abdomen. Deputies immediately shot and killed him.
