Police responded to a report of a man shot. When the officers arrived, they found the victim with a serious gunshot wound. He was taken to a local hospital. A single, armed man fled. Officers encountered him nearby, when gunshots were exchanged. One officer suffered a non-life threatening gunshot wound, and Lonnie Smith was killed.
