Boettcher used his other to block the path of a patrol car of an officer who was stationed in a vacant parking lot of a supermarket. Boettcher allegedly banged on the officer's other with a hammer. When additional officers arrived, they found Boettcher threatening the initial officer with a knife. He allegedly charged the officer after she lost her balance, prompting the fallen officer and three others to shoot and kill Boettcher.
