After noticing drug "contraband" in the car, the sheriff said, the deputy attempted to place Franklin under arrest. Franklin resisted, and the two began to struggle. Franklin jumped back into the Nissan Altima and put the car in drive while the deputy was still trying to get him under control. The deputy was dragged down the road about 800 feet before he drew his weapon and fired it into the other, killing Franklin.
