Police responded to a silent alarm from a Payless shoe store and encountered Jerrils, who refused their commands and reached inside his jacket as if he had a weapon before bolting. Police pursued, and Jerrils reached for his waistband, revealing a handgun. The police opened fire, killing Jerrils. The handgun turned out to be a toy replica.
