Hummell drew a nearly 4-foot Samurai sword as he left a other, raised the blade and walked toward the officers, who drew their weapons and ordered Hummell to stop. He continued to advance slowly toward the officers. It was found that the officers were no further than 27 feet from Lance Hummell when an officer shot and killed him.
