Celaya and three others stole two 12 packs of beer from a store and drove away. Police surrounded the van and three surrendered. Celaya attempted to drive away. Police fired as many as 45 shots and killed Celaya. He was unarmed. Protests followed. The DA found the killing justified because they believed Celaya was armed.
